Need anatomy help!
9th-Dec-2006 12:23 pm
Hey, there.

Ok, so I'm about 2 hours into this John/Rodney painting, and I know  the anatomy is off in Rodney's face and John's hands (which are shapeless blobs right now. His left is suposed to be resting on his hip, and his right just barely cupping Rodney's face).

Anybody out there with a happy red pen want to scribble on this?

Cut for nudity, though no genitals or anything.

[ETA the half way decently sized one. :P]

The biggest problem I see is the fact that John's legs are cut off halfway down his shin. If they continued the way they should, he'd be standing in front of Rodney.

9th-Dec-2006 09:53 pm (UTC)
Hmmm... How can I change his position so that he's standing behind rodney? (I must have screwed the pose up... I'm drawing from a source pic, but changed rodney's legs. That must have thrown me off...)

Thank you muchly for the help!

Easiest way I can think of would be to make John bend over Rodney more, while moving the feet/legs back so the feet are where they're supposed to be. If you do that, though, it might be best to move the hand-on-his-hips elsewhere. It would look kinda awkward if you left it there. If you need more help, feel free to ask. ^^

Hmm... I have to say that I don't think I"m a good enough artist to pull that one off. I have to use photo reference to even get this far, and just don't know if i can do it without a reference. I'll try...

Thank you SO much for the help. I'll see if I can find any refrence for a pose like that...

I can give you a line-art base-body to work with, if you can find a face. ^^ It wont' be a photo-body, but you'd have the lines to know what to work over?
9th-Dec-2006 10:44 pm (UTC)
That'd be great. ... Actually, you could just put a round blank head in; I can do the faces (mostly) to whatever I need them to be... That'd be great. I SO need to be able to do what you're talking about, and I'm really not good at it...

Want me to do a progression-style thing so you can watch how I go about doing it? *grins*
9th-Dec-2006 11:08 pm (UTC)
SWEET! Please!
9th-Dec-2006 11:55 pm (UTC)
Do you want the same position for John, or can I come up with a new one?
10th-Dec-2006 12:19 am (UTC)
You can come up with a new one, but... John should still be toppy... and imposing, in a very John way.

Does that make sense?
10th-Dec-2006 12:22 am (UTC)
You mean that Rodney's his bitch, right? *grins* In that bitchy-bottom way of his.
10th-Dec-2006 12:25 am (UTC)
hee! Yup. This is a pic for Xanthe's General and Dr. Sheppard, so rodney is definatly the bitch.

Something akin to what I posted up there to show you what was off, that is, only with a bit more detail.
9th-Dec-2006 11:00 pm (UTC)
Draw-over in red ;)

I hope this helps - I tried to place them in respect to each other.
About the face: I think the corner of his mouth is kind of stretched out, which makes his mouth look like a slightly over-large gash - maybe you could just close off a bit of it :)
9th-Dec-2006 11:03 pm (UTC)
Also: his neck seems a bit massive, but that might just be because you haven't really added deep shadows to the back of it...

I'll leave this image up for a few days, then take it down - you can copy it to your hard disk if you find it helpful :)
10th-Dec-2006 12:24 am (UTC)
I've already copied it (:D).

I think you're right about the mouth. Something elese is bothering me about the mouth, but I can't figure it out yet. And I think his forehead is too slopey....

Re: neck; yeah, I think it's because I did't shade john because I know his anatomy is wrong. I can hope, anyway!

And yes, that looks better. I (with help!) am redrafting john's body position entirely.

Thank you SO much for the help.
10th-Dec-2006 03:09 am (UTC) - Okay, large-comment ahoy!
We start off with the sorta-skeleton.

With this stage, you can add however many bones you want, so long as you get the basic configuration down. Main thing is to get the figure balanced and positioned how you want it.

This one should be pretty easy to understand. With every thing there's a center of gravity it's balanced around. I tend to use the line as a final test to make sure that I've got everything balanced.

And now I start adding in the basic shapes of a body.

Here I've started to put more details on the muscles, which can lead to discoveries that Something Looks Off. Here, it's that the near-shoulder is way too high as compared to the rest of the body.

Now I start adding details and smoothing out the lines. Aka, adding skin. This is where it's helpful to know where bones and muscles are located on the body so as to know how certain lines will look on the body.

And this is just to show the differences between my beginning and ending sketches. ^__^ you just gotta keep working with it.

And here's the semi-finalized one. Only left to do is add clothes, which isn't that hard since you can already see where and how the limbs bend. If you want me to do a quick draw-over for that, let me know. otherwise I'll leave it to you! ^^

This is PHENOMENAL. Thank you SO much!

In gratitude, may I make you a picture? Clearly I"m still learning anatomy, but I can do coloring well. Please, name your price!

*__* Art? I adore shinies for me. <3 What fandoms do you do?

Do you mind if I repost this stuff on my journal for those that are interested? Or is this supposed to be a surprise? *grins*

Um... No, go head. It's not a suprize; this thing's about a year late. ^_^
10th-Dec-2006 04:03 am (UTC) - Re: Okay, large-comment ahoy!
hah, alright. Will post to my eljay. ^__^
10th-Dec-2006 04:15 am (UTC) - Re: Okay, large-comment ahoy!
Um... Didn't see the first part of the question!

I'll do whatever fandom you want. I've done (to date) HP and SGA, but as long as I get some source pics, I'll do what makes you squee.

My deviant art page (and omg there are some less than great pictures there!)

10th-Dec-2006 04:22 am (UTC) - Re: Okay, large-comment ahoy!
Ohohoh! Then you can choose between MacGyver O'niell and FF7's Cloud Strife/Sephiroth/Zack. ^___^ On the first link, the one on left is Cloud, the one with the long silver hair/on the right is Sephiroth. If you need backstory between the two, let me know and I'll share.

... and the icon I have? Is Cloud. Game canon dictates that he's a better-than-average crossdresser, even if the picture itself isn't canon. Oh, Square, how I love thee. ♥

And really, I like your stuff. =P No matter what you say.

Alright, if you do SG1, I'm always up for MacGyverJack stuffs. ^________^ ♥
